What cloth diaper do you like best for someone living in Florida?

Question by Anna: What cloth diaper do you like best for someone living in Florida?
We just moved to Florida and are starting to cloth diaper, but its so humid here so I'm trying to figure out which we should use. We also live in an apartment so we can't put them outside to dry.

Best answer:

Answer by in ♥ with my baby!
I live in Hawaii and in an apt. I find that prefolds dry the quickest indoors. Or flats would be even quicker but I dont use those. If you want something breathable, Motherease has Air Flow covers. http://www.mother-ease.com/cloth-diapers/AirFlowCovers. they should go over the mother ease fitteds.

Messenger Style Diaper Bags with magnetic clasps

The world of diaper bags has evolved at quite a pace nowadays. The modern Mom wants something that is more than just any old bag to carry around. Today, there is a need to address not only the functionality of a diaper bag, but of course how it looks matters to every mom. This has created an outstanding range of elegance and stylish bags that are at once practical and fashionable. None the less, the bags still break down into pretty much four broad categories like:

1. The Stroller.
These are designed with long handles so that it can be hung over the bars of the stroller and enable very quick access. Fun for all the family to use they're exceptionally popular.

2. The Messenger.
The Messenger Style Diaper Bags has its history in mailing bags hence these are Messenger name, and is perfect for those short trips to some supermarket. Often, Messenger Style Diaper Bags have a multitude of pockets which is always handy that can be readily accessed whilst wearing the bag. The styling of Messenger Style Diaper Bags is rather unisex and can look like a laptop bag, thus making them quite popular with Daddy. Messenger Style Diaper Bags are highly functional but these look great too.

3. The Backpack.
Obviously these bags sit across the back and consequently free-up the hands for the important tasks. They're extremely popular because these are so practical. However, so much functionality doesn't agree with everyone, and they are often overlooked for some fashion concerns.

4. The Designer Messenger Style Diaper Bags

Make no mistake and these bags are super fashionable. Cool, elegant, and stylish. They are not dissimilar to a clutch purse, although they can sling over shoulder. They are always provided with lots of space, although they do tend to be focused on any style. Some consider Designer Messenger Style Diaper Bags too impractical as they can be heavy across the shoulder.

So, there are the four broad strokes of diaper bags, although in many ways you will have many other considerations before you make your any choice. Moms are now investing in more that one Messenger Style Diaper Bags so as to cater to their many different needs. Too, you will have a multitude of choice is simply the various fabrics that are available for Messenger Style Diaper Bags. Keep an eye open for anti-bacterial lining of the Messenger Style Diaper Bags. Alongside your choice of fabric you will be presented with an unrivaled choice of prints: solid colors, polka dots, metallic’s, rock n roll, stripes, sports, pink and white, zebra print, black and white, brown and pink and various such beautiful and amazing combinations are available. With  Messenger Style Diaper Bags, then you'll have decisions about thermal pockets for bottles and all manner of different ways for the bag enclosures - perhaps the most elegant being magnetic clasps in Messenger Style Diaper Bags.

I love these fitted diapers. I pair them with a Thirsties cover and my daughter's breastmilk poo explosions stay inside the diaper with no leakage at all. I am so impressed with them. They line dry a bit slowly because they are thick, but dry quickly in the dryer. I line dry them though and they're pretty much completely dry after a few hours in the sun. Poo stains come out easily when I hang them in the sun. The elastic legs fit snugly, but don't leave bright red marks on her legs. They are trim fitting as well. I think I'll go buy some more!

LOVE these for NEWBORNS! They're super absorbent, but still dry in a reasonable amount of time, and truly fit 5lb preemies through 12lbs or so. And the TWO rows of snaps make them very versatile, even accommodating the cord stump, and DURABLE for this time period when babies go through SOOOO many dipes per day! Velcro just doesn't hold up for infants. Any BF poo stains easily come out in the sun! They are very trim too, allowing you to use many different brands of covers with them easily. Can you tell I LOVE these!! For our next baby I will buy at least 30 of these size 0s, instead of prefolds or any of the other fitteds we tried...even with the cost involved. They're worth it! But then I'll switch to bG OS dipes when baby's bigger, like 12+ pounds.
Note: The larger size Kissaluvs still fit great, but in order to maintain their shorter drying time, they're not designed with anymore absorbency to match how toddlers start to "hold" their pee and then pee all at once So you may have to add an insert to increase absorbancy, losing the diapers nice trim design...

These are by far my favorite diapers for a newborn! My son was 9lbs 2oz at birth and these worked great from day one and for several months. They are great at holding in BF poo and super absorbent for pee. As my son grew and slept longer, we started adding a doubler at night.
Washing was super easy. I was a little unnerved when, after a couple months they started to look stained, but one round of drying in the bright sunshine and they looked like new (I kid you not, they looked like new diapers, unbelievable!).
I did find that since they take a while to dry, I needed to buy a few more than anticipated because I prefer to line dry instead of putting them in the dryer. Line drying does take a while for all the layers of these dipes. They can also be a little stiff right off the line, so I toss them in the dryer for just a few minutes and they soften right up. They're still perfectly functional if they're stiff and my son never seemed to mind, I just liked the feel better if they'd tossed around in the dryer for just a few minutes.
The best part though? I used these on my first son and they still have plenty of wear left for my next one, due next month. Now THAT'S a bargain (especially when you consider that a friend borrowed them in between)! Super good quality and longevity!

Dad's Diaper bag

Dad's Diaper bag

The Dad Bag & the Movement

Why would dad need his own diaper bag? I have three young ones and I can say from experience that each "job" has its own equipment, so to speak. Sure you could use a bagpack or a messenger bag or perhaps in a pinch you could use your wife's diaper bag. But to be an organized dad and wear something that better reflects your personal style (as opposed to the pink flowers and polka dots on your wife's bag), you will need a seperate bag.

With my first kid, I could get away with jamming a few diapers in my back pocket and going on an adventure with him, now with three kids, two in diapers, I need as much organization as I can afford. The Diaper Dude (DD) brand, which takes the traditional "female-centric" diaper bag and makes it "dude friendly." "Most diaper bags for men were backpacks, lacking in accessibility and functionality," says Chris Pegula, founder of LA-based, Diaper Dude.

Chris calls his product a movement, but I question the merit of this statement and wonder if it is merely clever marketing fodder. But if you meditate on the idea of what active fathering is, which for me is spending time with your kids, going places with them and forging those good memories and great adventures (and yes, changing their diapers along the way). Changing a baby's diaper is the most common and thankless, I may add, acts of parenting. To be an active dad and parent you must share the tasks (the good, the bad and the stinky), and for some, maybe, that begins with something as simple as a bag with a changing pad in it and pockets designed perfectly for diapers and bottles. If you look around (and I have extensively) there is an inherent lack of dad-centric products out there and he is filling a need. So for those of us guys who want to be active dads we need our "equipment" and Chris is serving it up hot and with plenty of style.

Diaper Dude | Deluxe Bag

Form or function?

These bags have star-power to boot; you cannot open a magazine without seeing a famous dad of today - ranging from Brad Pitt and David Arquette, to Matthew Broderick, Ben Stiller, Patrick Dempsey and more....carrying The Diaper Dude.

This line of bags has a number of options, both in design and in style. They have the compact Mini which seems derivative of the dreaded fanny packs of yester-year but it has been updated with a long shoulder strap which gives it a fresh look. For those runs to the park or to the store and back or the Survival Pack which will cover all the bases for you, right down to the matching insulated bottle holders for those longer trips. And yes, there is a backpack version as well, complete with a plethora of secret pockets and compartments for changing pads and bottles and such. Style-wise and street-wise, Diaper Dude covers the bases of all the dad-types out there; the urban hipster, the metro-dude, the rock star, the hippy, the techie dude, the sports dude, the list goes on.

Going beyond just diapers, the Dude brand includes items such as an on-the-go first aid kit and a Dude picnic blanket. When your kid wants to dress more like Dad, Diaper Dude has created "Little D's", a kid style messenger bag. Most DD bags are in the -110 buck range, which is on par for well design and well constructed backpacks, sports bags and messenger bags out there, but you can find DD items as low as .

Simply put, the Diaper Dude has the best options for dad on the market. Overall, I think Chris is definitely onto something, the biggest snag I have had with the bag is getting my wife from stealing it from me.

I did tons of research and couldn't decide between this bag and the Fleurville Mothership. I am SO glad I chose the Skip*Hop Studio Diaper Tote!!!!
This bag is awesome. So many pockets - and not those small, useless pockets, either. All of the pockets are a great size and really help keep everything organized. The handles are a great length and fit nicely over the shoulder; the handle straps also stay put on my shoulder, which is important when you're carrying a baby. The bag looks great, too. Not too fancy, but not too casual. (I have it in black) The material is soft (can't think of a better word) so it's easy to squeeze in to tight spaces - but yet it's sturdy. I have a Fleurville Lexi tote and I love it, too, but that bag is kind of stiff. I think this Skip*Hop will become my everyday bag. It is a bit large - so if you're not in to large bags this may be better as an over-night diaper bag. But I can fit everything I need in here, and have room for a book, my make-up bag, wallet, phone, and then some. I only wish they made the inside a brighter color (like the Fleurvilles, which have bright blues, greens, pinks, etc.) to add a little spunk, but who looks inside the bag anyway...
To give you an idea of how much stuff you can put in this bag, here is what I have in it right now:
    1. 5 diapers
    2. Wipes container AND small package of face wipes
    3. 8oz bottle and 6oz bottle of water
    4. 3 pairs of baby pants
    5. 3 onesies
    6. butt paste
    7. baby tylenol
    8. large nose sucker (you know what i'm talking about!)
    9. package of boogie wipes
    10. packets of hand sani-wipes
    11. package of kleenex
    12. 3 burp cloths
    13. 3 bibs
    14. 3 small toys
    15. small baby hoodie and bib in the bottom zipper (awesome secret pocket!)
    16. wallet
    17. small make-up bag
    18. cell phone
    19. camera
    20. sunglasses with case
    21. small blanket on the outside flap
(Don't judge me.....I'm out of town and had to pack lots-o-stuff!)
And there are still some pockets not in use! All this stuff is in its own pocket (except for the clothes) so it's not all just piled in there and hard to find.
I highly recommend this bag - I have been very impressed with it and am glad I bought it.

At last, I've found my perfect diaper bag. I've tried many other brands (Petunia Pickle Bottom, Fleurville, OiOi, Lexie Barnes and even other Skip Hop models) only to find some important element lacking - usually lack of organization, space, style or security. But this bag has it all.
*Two roomy external bottle pockets also fit sippies and 16 oz. thermos bottles
*Two interior bottle pockets also fit sippies (hard to see these pockets in the Skip Hop provided photos, but they were a nice surprise)
*Nice and roomy interior zip pocket in main compartment, large enough to fit a spare onesie, socks, and knit pants
*Foldable changing pad which is softer nylon, not the cold cheapy vinyl Skip Hop uses in the Dash and Duo lines.
*Large exterior pocket in the back fits coloring books and magazines, and has a magnet closure (magnet isn't that strong, however - wish it was a snap closure instead)
*Medium pocket in back which has antimicrobial lining. Not sure if this pocket is supposed to be for food (seems too small for use as a lunch compartment and snacks might get crushed) - it is way too big for pacifiers...would fit around 20 pacifiers though if necessary. I use it for my wallet and wristlet and hair comb. Diapers and wipes would fit here too.
*2 front zip pockets. One on top is good size for your cell and keys. One on bottom a good size for burp cloths, bibs, travel size lotions.
*Nickel feet on bottom - protects from wear and scuffs
*Beautiful ribbed nylon (not sure how nylon is "eco" though) fabric. I have this bag in black and it looks sharp.
Overall, the only thing I would change is having a snap option on the back pocket (versus magnet). That is a very minor issue compared the issues I found in other bags (poor construction, lack of interior pockets, no exterior pockets for sippies, cheap zippers, etc...). This one is a keeper, wish I had it when my second child was born a year ago!

I'm currently using this bag as a diaper bag on the weekend but during the week as my breast pump bag. There's enough room to fit the breast pump, all accessories and even the large insulated breast milk carrier. Even with the breast pump, there's still enough room for my lunch, a water bottle in the easy access outside pocket, cell phone, wallet and even some paper work. The best part of this bag is that there is absolutely no PVC so no gross odor and earth friendly. It's a high end bag with a reasonable price. The only small complaint is the red skip hop tag on the outside which is a dead give away that it's diaper bag...otherwise no one would have a clue.
Update: After a month, there was a small defect in the bag. I contacted Skip Hop and they sent me a new one overnight. I couldn't believe how great customer service was. Buy with confidence.

I just found this bag at BBB and took it home right away! Our first diaper bag was the Skip Hop Duo and I hated it. I was able to fit all of our things from that bag and... have space for more. I think with the Duo the middle compartments are hard to use b/c the pockets get smooshed when you fill the other pockets. Anyway, I love this bag too b/c it doesn't look so casual. I'm also short, so I hated the long shape of the Duo. This bag can be attached to the stroller or carried like a shoulder bag. I don't feel so frumpy with this bag! My husband will have to deal. I got the black one, but the gold and slate are nice too. Only negative is the patent trim. It does look a little cheap, but with the black one you can't really tell. The brown one looks more obvious. I would have gotten slate, but it wasn't at the store.

Be wary! This bag is falling apart. I've had it for less than 4 months, and I am not hard on my things. I usually resell my "old" bags and baby items on craigslist, but this won't even be decent enough to donate to Goodwill! I wonder if all the good review this bag got were from when people first got it in the mail, because I was really excited when I got it. In hindsight, I wish I'd gotten the Babymel Amanda bag I'd debated getting.
    Pros:
    1. I like all the pockets it has to organize my toddler's sippy cups, snacks, toys, diapers, etc.
    2. The stroller straps work well.
    Cons:
    1. One of the inside pockets tore.
    2. There are threads coming out of various places on the outside of the bag. It looks haggard.
    3. There is a rip where the faux leather meets the fabric on the sippy cup holder on the side. In fact, many places where the fabric meets the trim are frayed and beginning to show signs of impending rips.
    4. The inside pockets are smooshed because the bag has no "hold" to it, so it can be difficult to get into the inside pockets - or find them for that matter. It kind of makes all those pockets useless.

While these are thin, they definitely are *not* the same as using tissue. They are long enough that you can fold them if you need more thickness. Tissue will disintegrate when wet, so please do not heed the previous reviewer's advice and use tissue instead. ;)
We haven't had a problem with them being too narrow, but your mileage may vary here.
Overall, I've been very pleased with them. They are much softer than the Gerber brand of liners (and being flushable is a huge plus). We've not had any issues with flushing them either (we have a septic system and an older toilet), and they work fine for what we need.
The only thing I would caution is that if you're needing them to protect a cloth diaper from an oil-based cream, you might want to fold it or use two liners, since they are so thin. But this product comes in two rolls, so there are lots of sheets included.

Bummis cloth diaper liners are much softer/flimsier than Imse Vimse. Because of this they do not hold up well for a couple of washings if they have only had pee on them. However, they seem to do just find if rinsed out by hand and can be reused that way a few times if it's worth the little bit of extra time to save on buying more.
In regards to the person making the claim that a tissue from the grocery store will work just as well...Think again. Typical paper towel and tissue products will break down and disintegrate in a diaper under normal wear and usage. My tight wad self has tried that. If you expect a diaper liner to work you are going to have to spend the money to BUY a diaper liner. If softness is what you want I haven't found anything better than Bummis. If multiple uses is desired something like Imse Vimse is a better choice.

My baby is almost 1 year and I bought my first package of liners before she was born when I purchased BumGenius diapers. We never used them at first because milk diapers just get thrown in the wash. But, when she started eating solids ... well, diapers get more fun. :) We started using the liners in the AM when we knew she was going to poop. Works great! Now that she is less predictable, we don't use them at home as much. However, our babysitters (I work M-f) love using the liners so they don't have to deal with messes; they just drop it in the toilet. Good trade-off to make them comfortable using cloth diapers over disposables. Plus, I didn't want something that I had to rinse and wash; I already wash the diapers so what would be the point of having liners at all? Thus, I wanted flushable liners. Very pleased with the ease of use. I split up the rolls so they are in both the baby changing area and in the diaper bag. I'd say they last about 8 months for me (we are not using them constantly). The only negative is that they do get a little scrunched in the middle when being used but still worth the money. I suspect the lack of packaging contributes to a low price.

These are far softer than Kushies or Imse Vimse. Those other ones are like sandpaper. The Bummis work just as well and don't scratch your baby's bottom! Do NOT waste your money on the other brands like I did! These also flush just fine, even in old plumbing like ours from the 1920's! The size is great for toddlers and they have been a huge part of my success in convincing my husband to cloth diaper our kids!

Are any luggage check ins free now? Or are we going to end up paying to hell and back for our suitcase, and our 2 extra check ins? And also, if we have an infant that does not have their own seat, they dont get a carry on right? So the diaper bag counts as one of the 2 adults carry on?
Thanks~

I am pretty sure the first check-in is 15 dollars but I don't know after that. Make sure your bags are under 50 pounds or u have 2 pay extra.
i dont think the infant is a carry on and the diaper bag is a carry on.

How to Get Started with Cloth Diapers

How to Get Started with Cloth Diapers

To cloth diaper full-time, you'll need approximately 12-18 diapers a day, with either a built-in waterproof layer or separate covers. Separate covers do not need to be changed unless soiled, so you can get by on about 3 per day. For newborn covers, you may want to have a few extra.
If you're looking to cloth diaper a newborn full-time from Day 1, the best advice is to begin purchasing in advance so that you'll have everything ready. Keep in mind that you don't have to go all or nothing. Start with a small variety before you purchase a larger amount of the ones you like best. Try cloth diapers at home during the day, and expand your usage to nights and outings over time as you gain confidence in your diapers.
If you want to start out full-time but don't have the funds to buy 2-3 days worth of your favorite style, consider temporarily bulking up your stash with cheaper alternatives and/or washing every day. Remember, every time you use a cloth diaper, you are saving money, saving environmental resources, lessening your child's total chemical exposure, etc.
Helpful Accessories (and ways to get by without if necessary)
--dry pail
Just an empty container to hold used diapers. A lid is optional, if kept out of reach.
--pail liner
Made of the same material as diaper covers, these keep your pail clean and can be washed with the diapers.
--wet bags
Just like a pail liner, but small enough to travel with your wet diapers safely zipped inside. Usually has a decorative outer layer.
--diaper sprayer
This mini-shower hooks to your toilet's water supply line and removes poop from diapers quickly and thoroughly.
--snappi
This little invention holds a diaper in place with little plastic teeth instead of pins. Works great for getting a snug fit with a prefold.
All of the inventions above are well worth it in terms of convenience. However, you can get by using plastic grocery bags to hold your used diapers, using other methods to remove poop (see above), and using a wrap cover to hold your unpinned prefolds in place.

cute and thin for a cloth diaper. Really tough to get a good fit around my baby's legs and my baby is huge for his age. Most of the time there will be leaks through the leg hole. Also, not as absobent as fuzzi bunz.

i really like how easy these are to use. They go on and off just like a disposable diaper. However, I prefer gDiapers and Flip because they are much less bulky and have a disposable option when we're away from home.

I got these before I did more research on cloth diapers. They're cute, work fine, and I don't think bulk is a problem. The only current problem is that the velcro tabs don't want to stay back, so I get a diaper chain pretty often. Another problem I had was my pack (that I bought from another seller, and not Amazon) was the missing washcloths. The pack said it came with 2 washcloths, but mine didn't. Not a big enough deal to me to put up a fuss because I have plenty of washcloths, and I still saved money. I just don't like that I paid for the pack, and it's missing something.
After doing more research and reading other reviews, I just wish that I tried Fuzzibunz or some of the other brands.
(By the way, my prefolds and Thirsties/Bummis wraps work GREAT. I just wanted a few AIO or Pocket diapers so my husband or babysitters will have an easier time if I'm not home.)
Saving money getting the Kushies is great if you actually save money. If they don't last (like many reviews I read said), then you don't save money in the long run. Just get the ones with better reviews and you'll probably be much happier that you did.
